Jayson Tatum or Luka Doncic?

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

You’re starting an NBA roster right now and you have to decide whether you want Jayson Tatum or Luka Doncic to lead your franchise.

With Luka Doncic, you’re getting a 21 year old who can score all over the court. You’re going to be getting a guy who will give you a guaranteed 20-25 points with ease. I would say that Doncic is the better offensive player. He can do everything on the offensive side. He’ll make that flashy pass that no one except himself knew was coming, or he’ll take a step back three over your favorite player. Doncic is definitely a better passer and playmaker than Jayson Tatum and he always will be. Yes, Doncic is a triple-double machine, but he does have the ball in his hands every possession. Porzingis is the only player that Doncic really has to worry about sharing the ball with. Over in Boston, Tatum is getting his own while averaging nearly 24 points, but he’s also gotta share the rock with Jaylen Brown, another young star in the making. Kemba Walker who has already proven that he is a superstar, and lastly, Gordon Hayward who is still trying to get back to the player he once was in Utah.

However, we are talking about starting a franchise. My answer to this question is Jayson Tatum. Tatum, 22, has 2-3 inches on Doncic, and has already proven that he can take on all types of defenders. Doncic is a liability on the defensive side and it is very easy to get a mismatch between his opponents. Tatum is a lengthy 6’8 SF/PF, who can guard point guards through centers. Yes, Doncic is the better offensive player, but with a franchise, that would belong to Jayson Tatum. It would be pretty crazy to see what he could do with the ball in his hands, especially during crunch time. Personally I think the most important part is that we’ve already seen what Tatum could do in the playoffs. As a rookie, he led the Celtics while averaging 18.5 PPG, all the way to game 7 against King James and the Cavs. Tatum has proved that he can show up in big times, but have we seen Doncic even perform in a playoff yet.

Whether you believe in starting your franchise with Luka Doncic or Jayson Tatum, the future of your team will be in great hands.
